The included letter confirms the rifle's caliber, octagon barrel, half magazine, and plain trigger. The rifle was manufactured prior to 1898, but not received in the warehouse until March 1, 1900 and finally shipped on March 8, 1900 as part of order 53840. It was returned for repairs on September 21, 1900. The barrel has a dovetailed front sight with bright blade insert with an elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight and is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "38-55" at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the model designation, trade mark, and patent information in three lines. The serial number is marked on the front of the frame. It is fitted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with forend cap and crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 75% plus of the original finish with some finish wear on the frame, case colors present on the sides of the lever, a group of fine scratches on the right side of the frame ahead of the loading gate and on the magazine tube, and various other minor marks and scratches throughout. The exposed surfaces have a brown patina while the buttplate has a mottled gray patina. The wood is fine with a contrasting dark forearm and golden buttstock, a vertical scratch present on the left side of the buttstock, and some other minor scratches and scattered dings. Mechanically fine.
