The carbine was manufactured in 1870 with the block numeral serial number behind the trigger. It has the standard "pinched" blade front sight on the magazine retaining band, the two-line Winchester address and King's improvement marking, the two leaf rear sight, and smooth walnut forearm and straight wrist stock with carbine buttplate. The receiver has master level engraving consisting of detailed leafy scrollwork patterns and punch dot backgrounds. A bird's head is worked into the scrollwork near the blank banner on the right side, and a larger eagle head is worked into the designs on the left. The receiver at the breech has a Nimschke style star. The bird heads and star suggest the rifle was engraved by L. D. Nimschke or his shop. Also, note the designs around the lever cross pin which is consistent with Nimschke's work. See page 50 of "L. D.
