Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

The carbine was manufactured in 1870 with the block numeral serial number behind the trigger. It has the standard "pinched" blade front sight on the magazine retaining band, the two-line Winchester address and King's improvement marking, the two leaf rear sight, and smooth walnut forearm and straight wrist stock with carbine buttplate. The receiver has master level engraving consisting of detailed leafy scrollwork patterns and punch dot backgrounds. A bird's head is worked into the scrollwork near the blank banner on the right side, and a larger eagle head is worked into the designs on the left. The receiver at the breech has a Nimschke style star. The bird heads and star suggest the rifle was engraved by L. D. Nimschke or his shop. Also, note the designs around the lever cross pin which is consistent with Nimschke's work. See page 50 of "L. D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver" also by Wilson for an image of a Model 1866 from Nimschke's pattern book that has a very similar head to the one on the right of this example. Page 55 has examples of eagle heads similar to the one on the left here.

ConditionVery good as custom engraved and later refinished (barrel and magazine). 60% of the blue finish remains with some areas a more fired blue tone and some more plum toned. The receiver has an artificially aged, attractive patina with crisp engraving. There is a small chip/ding on the right side of the action and minor marks throughout. The wood is very good as lightly sanded and reoiled with some minor marks. The action is fine.
