Description:

This is an absolutely beautiful, late production Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Model 1866 saddle ring carbine that was manufactured circa 1883. This carbine has the distinctive brass receiver, blue 20-inch barrel, 13-shot magazine and barrel bands. The hammer, lever, trigger and carbine style iron buttplate are color casehardened. The loading gate and bolt are niter blue. The stock and forearm are oil finished straight grain American walnut. The carbine has the Fourth Model features which include: receiver profile with less drop ahead of the hammer than earlier models, color casehardened buttplate with sliding brass trapdoor and cleaning rod still in the butt stock trap. The script serial number stamped on the lower tang between the lever latch and tang screw. The left side of the receiver has the correct saddle ring stud with the saddle ring still attached. The barrel has a block mounted steel front sight located behind the upper barrel band and late sporting style folding leaf rear sight marked "1873" and graduated to 900 yards. The magazine has the late style screw fastened cap. The hammer has forged bordered knurling on the spur. The butt trap contains a four piece jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two line: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "160460", is stamped in script numerals on the lower receiver tang.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 90% plus of the bright original blued finish on the barrel and magazine tube with nice sharp bright blue on the barrel showing some fading and blue thinning on the tube with some old minor oxidation/rust spot just showing through. The receiver and side plates are all original and have a wonderful medium colored mustard yellow aged patina on all the parts showing that this carbine has never been disassembled. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with only some minor repetitive light scratch marks present on the sides of the stock and forend. The wood to metal fit is excellent, nice and tight. The cocking lever and buttplate both shows 75% of their case colors overall. The markings are clear and sharp and most of the screw heads show some old tightening, but they are all not buggered up. This is just a exceptional high condition Winchester Model 1866 SRC.
