Manufactured in 1883. The top barrel flat has a matte finish and is marked with the two-line address/King's Improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed blade front sight and the rear sight has six folding leafs marked 1 thru 6 and a folding ladder sight ahead of the leafs which is graduated from 7 to 10. The upper left flat at the breech is marked "40-60 W.C.F.", and the top flat and the top of the receiver at the breech are marked with the Winchester oval proof indicating the rifle was sent back to the factory and the proofmarks were added by the factory after whatever work they did was completed. The rifle is a Third Model with the integrally machined dust cover rail. The upper tang is marked "{MODEL 1876}". The serial number is marked on the lower tang, and the bottom of the cartridge carrier is marked "40-60". Special order single set trigger, blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel eye on the forend cap and stock, and a crescent buttplate.

Fine as professionally restored with 95% blue finish remaining showing some edge wear and a few minor scratches on the barrel and some edge wear on the receiver, as well as some pin prick type pitting on the left side receiver plate and receiver. Most of the vivid case colors remain on the hammer. The lever is a mix of vivid case colors and gray patina and some minor oxidation. The buttplate has some minor oxidation and the balance a smooth silver gray patina. The wood is also very good with a few hairline cracks on the right rear of the stock and overall some minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
