Description:

This an example of a 20th Century custom engraved Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle that originally was manufactured in 1869. This rifle features style two engraving with open panels on both side plates and scrollwork on the forearm cap and buttplate heel with a punch dot background. The engraving on the receiver features flowing floral scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The cartridge elevator is engraved with a flower with a scalloped and dot border. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line address/King's Improvement patent dates and the serial number is on the lower tang behind the trigger. There are factory mounted sling swivels on the forend cap and stock. Dovetailed brass blade front and folding ladder, (graduated to 8) rear sights. The barrel and magazine tube are blue, the hammer, lever, forend cap, receiver and buttplate are brass. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. There is no factory letter available at the time of writing, but the engraving appears to be of period and in the style of Winchester factory engraving.

Rating Definition:

Very good as custom engraved. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth mottled brown patina. The brass has an attractive natural dark aged patina (lighter on the side plates). The reoiled wood is good. The forearm has been freshened with a coat of varnish some time ago, and overall there are some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. A small area of the patent dates is fading, otherwise the markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is very good.
