Description:

The Stevens 404 rifle was manufactured circa 1913-1915. Only an estimated 250 were manufactured due to WWI. This example has a rarer number 44 action and is marked with the J. Stevens A&T address and patent marking on the barrel on the right near the breech, "22 L.R." on the left, "44 0" with "EX" over the "0" on the face of the frame, and matching serial numbers. Consignor states the buttstock and plate are numbered to the gun. The rifle has the standard globe front sight, Lyman receiver peep sight, checkered semi-beavertail forearm, and a smooth straight wrist stock with hard rubber buttplate. There is a sling swivel on the underside of the barrel fitted with a quick release leather sling. The unmarked sling matches the description of the prone shooting sling in "Savage & Stevens Arms: Collector's History" by Jay Kimmel on page 72. Original prone slings are so rare we could not locate another for comparison in our sales history or extensive library.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% finish with only a few minor scratches. The sling is very fine with only slight wear on the leather and some bright verdigris on the fittings.
