Description:

Measuring 12 3/4 inches overall, the general profile of the horn consists of a part round/part octagonal spout, a scalloped and banded edge along the top of the main body, and a flush-mounted hardwood plug with a space for a knob or extension. The body is white over most of the length and dark at the spout, and features extensive detailing. Around the plug is a 3 1/4 inch tall wraparound scene of an native war party; six men, armed with a mixture of war clubs, European-style swords, spears and bows, with one carrying a flag of Great Britain (1707-1801 pattern) and another wearing a bicorn hat in addition to the usual garb. Above the war party is a small wrap-around scene of a village, and filling the remainder is a river map. The map is devoid of markings, depicting a single river roughly 15 inches long wrapped nearly two complete times around the horn in a spiral, with the occasional small tributary, islands, and star-pattern forts of various sizes. While not confirmed, this horn may have doubled as a navigation tool for a river pilot, fur trader, or similar water-borne professional.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with some light age cracks and handling marks. Both the spout plug and the knob for the base are absent. The decoration is sharply executed.
