Early American Flintlock Fowling Piece with Raised Carved Stock

This early flintlock fowling piece was manufactured circa late 18th century. Many fowling pieces and privately owned rifles were pressed into service due to the lack of military arms available for the Continental Army and various state militia units. It has several attributes that suggest it was manufactured in Allentown or Bethlehem possibly by John (Johannes) Moll, Sr. who was active from around 1764 until his death in 1794. His son continued the business until around 1820. Note the similar star designs on the cheekrests and the carving designs of several of the Allentown-Bethlehem rifles pictured in "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" by Kindig, "Kentucky Rifles & Pistols, 1750-1850," and other books on classic long rifles and fowling pieces. It has rifle style sights, brass furniture, no visible markings, and a full length stock.

ConditionGood. The iron surfaces have a dark brown patina with some oxidation and oil stains. The hammer exhibits deep pitting and filing under lower jaw suggesting an old repair. There is extensive deep flash pitting centered on the touch hole. The brass has an attractive dark aged patina and some verdigris. The stock is also good with some chips along the edges and various scrapes and dings from use. Most of the carving remains distinct. The lock functions fine but is a little loose.
