Description:

This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in March 1865. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral fifteen-shot magazine, brass receiver and crescent brass buttplate. The left side of the barrel and oil-finished walnut stock are fitted with a loop for a sling hook and sling swivel. The barrel has the original folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and screw stop for the elevation bar. The rifle has the late production features which include; (1) large, two-line legend with all serif letters, (2) buttplate with pointed heel, (3) large diameter magazine follower and (4) beveled follower cuts in the receiver. The rifle serial umber, "8200", is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, A small "W" which indicates that the rifle was inspected by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the underside of the barrel behind the lever latch. The Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle manufactured during the Civil War. Although the Ordnance Department purchased only a small number of Henry rifles for issue to two selected regiments, most of the Henry rifles manufactured during the Civil War were purchased by individual Federal soldiers who appreciated the firepower of a fifteen-shot lever action rifle. The Henry rifle was equally popular on the post-Civil War frontier. Archeological evidence indicates that a significant number of Henry rifles were used by native American warriors in the battle of Little Bighorn.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle shows the hard use typical of Henry rifles but is s good looking rifle that retains nearly all of the original components. The front sight blade is a replacement, a peep aperture has been added to the rear sight leaf and the a hole has been drilled in the upper receiver tang. Aside from these period modifications the rifle remains all original. The barrel has numerous minor dents and scratches with some scattered surface discoloration. The blue finish on the barrel has faded to a plum patina. The barrel legend and serial number are clear. The case colors on the hammer, lever and trigger have aged to a mottled brown patina. The bottom of the lever has dark patches of age discoloration. The brass receiver and buttplate are in good condition and have a very attractive patina. The receiver has scattered minor scratches but the edges are sharp and the side plate joints are tight and free from pry-marks. The buttplate has patches of age discoloration but remains in good overall condition. The stock has been lightly sanded and re-oiled but remains in good overall condition with only a few, minor handling marks. This is a good looking example of a late Civil War production Henry lever action rifle.
