Description:

40 1/4 inches overall, with a 34 1/8 inch blade, 17 1/4 inch false edge, two fullers running along the blade, short triple fullers on the ricasso, an etched "crown/GR" cipher on each side and "HARVEY" beneath the "GR" on the left side. "Harvey" may be Samuel Harvey, noted Birmingham swordsmith active in the 1700s, or one of his descendants. The guard is constructed from sturdy steel barwork, with arrowhead shaped accents cut into a set of four broader panels, with an upturned rear quillion, a wire wrapped rayskin grip, and a semi-spherical pommel. A similar example, dated 1755 and bearing Harvey's marking, can be seen on page 148 of "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George Neumann.

Rating Definition:

Good. The steel components show a mixed gray patina, with some shallow pitting, mild spotting and a few chips along the edges. The blade shows a bend to the left at the base of the false edge. One full turn of loose wire remains on the grip, the remainder absent, and the rayskin and underlying wood are splitting in the rear.
