Description:

Produced by an unknown smith, this appears to be a non-regulation variant of the British Model 1796 Heavy Cavalry Officers Dress Sword; the hilt is a dead ringer for the 1796, but the blade is traditionally double edged. Measuring 40 inches overall, with a 33 1/4 straight single fuller blade decorated on the lower quarter with gold highlighted martial and floral etching on a nitre blue field, a single edge and a flat spine. The hilt is gilt brass, with a "boat" style counter guard overlapping a 4 1/2 inch straight quillion crossguard and a smooth knuckle bow, with a wire wrapped grip and a ball pommel. With a brown leather scabbard with brass fittings.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The very fine blade shows light spotting, with over 85% of the original gold and blue. A thin crack is forming on the left side of the joint between the knuckle guard and crossguard, otherwise the hilt is very good, with a few areas of visible aged brass and a small amount of play in the grip wire. The scabbard is fair, with mild scuffing and some play in the fittings.
