Description:

This Winchester Model 1866 rifle's serial number dates to 1869 and is a full two thousand serial numbers ahead of the generally quoted range. The barrel has the two line King's improvement and Henry patent marking. It has a round blade/bead front sight, notch/folding ladder rear sight, and a straight grip walnut stock and forearm with sling swivels, and standard style rifle buttplate and forend cap. The trapdoor compartment contains a cleaning rod. The receiver has a fox on the right front, two hounds on the right behind the loading port, scroll and punch dot designs on the rear section on the right and most of the left, an unmarked banner (inscription ground off) on the left at center, and a reposed buck on the left front. The cartridge elevator has a geometric pattern. The receiver, forend cap, and buttplate are all silver plated.

Rating Definition:

Very good as custom engraved and silver plated. The barrel and magazine tube have a dark mixture of brown patina and blue finish. 90% of the silver plating remains and has taken on an aged patina. An inscription was removed from the left side of receiver (see above). The refinished wood is fine with a crack at the toe, some minor scrapes and dings, and a few small chips at the edges. The action functions fine, and the markings and engraving are mostly clear.
