Description:

This is a scarce example of an early Danish Madsen model 1907 serial number "87" light machine gun. These were developed in the 1902/03 time frame and have been sold to numerous countries all over the world both prior to and after WWI, with the last count being that these were use in over 30 countries world-wide. They were even tested by the U.S. Army at Springfield Armory in Sept 1903, but they were rejected based on the feed mechanism in use at that time. They are fairly unique and very well made machine gun that used the "long barrel recoil type" mechanism in that it has a short action in which the bolt moves reward only about 1/2 of an inch while the remainder of the recoil/loading cycle is completed by the barrel which actually recoils approximately 2 inches. This give the machine gun a short overall action making it more compact. It is magazine fed on the left side of the receiver. The side of the receiver is marked "Dansk Rekylriffel Syndikat/Kobenhavn", and serial number "87" visible is on the front edge of the receiver and top of the tang. It has a perforated barrel jacket with a large forward mounted bipod. It has no handguard and is fitted with a walnut buttstock with a hinged buttplate. It comes complete with three new in the grease barrels and seven magazines .

Rating Definition:

Very good condition with 30% of the faded thin blue finish overall with even honest wear overall with the barrel jacket having turned a gray patina with a more dark blue/black finish the complete receiver and action. The walnut stock retains its original military finish showing numerous handling marks overall with a 1 inch light stress crack on the right side behind the receiver. A very interesting and unique early Danish light machine gun.
