Rare Belgian Nagant Prototype Semi-Automatic Pistol, Serial Number 102

Produced in 1929 by Nagant, this pistol closely follows the pattern established by John M. Browning's early semi-automatic pistol work and bears the three-line, two-block markings "PATENTED/No 27373/JAN.18 1929" and "NAGANT/ARMES Bte/LIEGE BELGIQUE" on the left side of the slide and "NAGANT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 7.65" on the right. Notes from the consignor state that this pistol was part of an attempt by the Nagant firm to break into the semi-automatic arms trade, only to be shut out for infringing on Browning's patents owned by FN. The firm as a whole was bought out in 1931 by Imperia, leaving a short window when this pistol may have been produced. Belgian proofs are present on the slide, frame and barrel, with "7.65Br" on the frame above the trigger guard, smooth grips and a series of engravings.

ConditionAbout good with traces of the blue finish concentrated on the trigger guard and protected areas, a mixed gray patina on the remainder and scattered pitting and handling marks overall. Grips are fair with contrasting color on the panels, chips and dents. Mechanically fine.
