This is a Winchester Model 1876 rifle that was manufactured in 1886. The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edge. The rifle has a full octagon 24 inch barrel (shorter than standard) and a full-length magazine. The barrel has the standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and standard folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The rifle has a full blue finish with casehardened hammer, trigger and lever. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut and the stock is fitted with a blued steel shotgun style buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./ - KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "45-60 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "45-60" is stamped in script numerals across the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "{MODEL. 1876}" in fancy letters. The serial number "60788" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Very fine as partially refinished. The rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel and receiver. Nearly all of the professionally refinished (see above) blue finish is present on the magazine tube assembly and forearm cap. The receiver and side plates have most of the blue finish intact with some edge wear on the side plates and scuff marks on the dust cover rail. There are several spots of age discoloration and some very light scratches on the side plates and sides of the receiver. The blue finish on the dust cover is thin and has small patches of age spotting. The buttplate has expected handling wear and retains about 50% of the blue finish with light pitting on the heel. Most of the dark case colors are present on the hammer, trigger and sides of the lever. The bottom of the lever shows handling wear and the case colors have aged to a brown patina. The stock and forearm are in fine condition. The forearm is dark and the finish is worn. The stock retains nearly all of the original finish but has scattered, minor handling marks with a sliver of wood out of top right at frame juncture. This is a very fine example of a desirable Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle.
