Description:

This musket is a rare example of a Model 1795 musket that was manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal in 1813 and subsequently converted to percussion. This model was the first to be produced at the newly established Virginia arsenal and was utilized in the United States 19th century conflicts, including the War of 1812 and Civil War. This example is unique in that it has added engraved stock plates with highly detailed engraving and a rectangular inscription plate made of silver on the top of the wrist that reads "First Prize/Presented to C. E. Moore/ by the A. E. G. at their first Annual/drill/Feby. 22d 1848". The latter date places the presentation of the musket just after the end of the Mexican-American War. The lock has the standard Harpers Ferry markings and is dated 1813. The barrel has two proofmarks at the breech. Other features include a bayonet lug on the top of the barrel near the muzzle, blade front sight on the upper barrel band, sling swivels on the middle band and front of the trigger guard, and a trumpet head ramrod. The conversion from flintlock to percussion was done in the "French style" with a round bolster. Conversions of the 700,000+ muskets on hand to percussion by the U.S. arsenals began in earnest the same year this musket was presented. This style of conversion is believed to have been primarily performed by private contractors for the U.S. government. The hammer on this example appears to be the same style utilized on the Maynard tape system conversions.

Rating Definition:

Good. The eight German silver plates have a lightly aged patina. The silver inscription plate has an attractive tarnish. The iron components display a mixture of brown and gray patina, oxidation, light to mild pitting, and some stains. The stock is also good with moderate overall wear from use, handling, and storage along with some slivers and chips absent. The markings and engraving are crisp. The lock functions fine. a very attractive, historic example of American Military Longarms!
