Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor Carbine

Only 341 of these carbines were manufactured in total, and all were produced in 1871. The Model 1870 rifles and carbines were the last of the 50 caliber trapdoors manufactured at Springfield before the adoption of the popular .45-70 Government cartridge and production of the Model 1873. They were manufactured using surplus Civil War rifle-musket locks. This example is dated 1864 on the lock tail and has "1870/eagle head/cross arrows/U.S." on the top of the breechblock. It is equipped with a brass blade front sight and a combination folding ladder/notch rear sight. The left side of the smooth walnut halfstock is fitted with a saddle ring and bar, and the buttplate is the standard military style with "US" stamped on eh tang.

ConditionFine. The metal surfaces have a mostly gray blend of patina and light spotting. The stock is very good as sanded and re-oiled. No cartouches or inspector marks remain. There are a few minor gouges, dings, scratches, and small chips. The action functions are excellent, and the markings are crisp. This is a rare opportunity to get your hands on an example of the scarce Model 1870 carbine. These carbines are an integral part of the Springfield trapdoor line and are absent from most collections.
