Civil War Richardson & Overman Cartridge Model Gallager Saddle Ring Carbine

Only around 5,000, "Final Model", Gallager patent carbines were produced by Richardson & Overman in Philadelphia in March-May 1865, chambered for the .56-52 Spencer cartridge. At least half of the original contract was sold as surplus and were purchased by the French for the Franco-Prussian War. This example has a pinched blade front sight, folding leaf rear sight, saddle ring and bar, a smooth oil finished walnut stock with iron patch box, and a crescent buttplate. The top of the barrel has a "R" inspection mark. The back action lock plate has the three-line Richardson & Overman address over the serial number just behind the hammer and the two-line Gallager patent marking on the lower part of the tail.

ConditionVery good plus. The carbine has an overall brown patina with traces of original finish, light pitting, and minor oxidation. The wood is fine as sanded and refinished with numerous scrapes and dings and a few small chips. The lock functions fine.
