C. S. Richmond, VA. Marked Civil War Rifle-Musket with Bayonet and Scabbard

This rifle has blade and notch sight, "V/P/eagle head" proofed barrel, "U" marked barrel bands, sling swivels on the trigger guard and middle band, brass forend cap, brass buttplate with notch for a patch box door, "C.S./RICHMOND, VA." marked lock plate dated "1863" at the tail with the distinct "humpback" profile, and a nearly full length walnut stock with "W H 1864" carved on the right side of the butt. A "U.S." marked socket bayonet with leather scabbard is included. During the Civil War, the Richmond Armory manufactured a large number of rifle-muskets, carbines, and musketoons using parts and equipment captured at Harpers Ferry in April of 1861.

ConditionFair. The iron surfaces have an even brown patina, mild oxidation over mostly light pitting. The brass displays an aged patina. The stock is fine with numerous small scraped and dents. The lock functions fine, and the markings are clear. The bayonet is fair and has a dark brown patina, pitting, and oxidation. The scabbard is poor, incomplete missing frog.
