Confederate Foot Artillery Sword

Produced by an unidentified party. Like most of the arms turned out by Confederate small industry, this weapon is closely patterned after an antebellum American sword, specifically the Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword, and lacks makers markings. A domestic copy of the European "fascine sword", the Model 1832 was intended for brush clearing, branch chopping, and other rough use to prepare the way for the guns and was built heavy and sturdy to withstand such abuse. Measuring 24 3/8 inches long with an 18 7/8 inch long double edged single fuller blade that measures 2 inches wide at the base and a one-piece cast brass hilt with roughly shaped "CS" markings on the guard, twist pattern on the hilt and 5-pointed stars on the pommel. A similar sword is illustrated on page 140 of "Confederate Edged Weapons" and pictured on page 199 of "A Photographic Supplement of Confederate Swords", both by Albaugh.

ConditionFair, missing scabbard. The blade shows a mixed gray patina overall with scattered spotting, patches of heavy pitting near the tip and a few nicks on the edges. The hilt is good as roughly cast with some voids and scuffs.
