Description:

This is a very attractive example of a matchlock with distinctive Indo-Persian torador style "plank" stock. Matchlocks were used in India from the 16th century into the 20th century. Most of these smoothbore long guns display unique engraving, metal work, and other ornamentation. This example has extensive deeply cut relief engraving in floral patterns along the entire length of the barrel, a bone breech plate, silver plates under the barrel bands, unknown calligraphic markings on the rear plate, extensive niello worked side plates, and a smooth full length stock with multiple butt pieces. The ramrod is iron and has a stepped tip. The muzzle has a simple post front sight, and the rear sight is a notch at the breech.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The silver and brass components have an aged patina. More than half of the niello remains The remaining metal components have a gray-brown patina with spots of oxidation. There are some small pieces absent including the flash pan cover, but the action is functional. The wood is fine. There are some pieces broken or absent including parts of the wooden bands, the rear bane, and slivers along the forend edges. There is a crack near the center of the barrel, and some chipping. The bone pieces have an aged patina, some chips and slivers absent, and age cracks. This is overall a fine example of the distinctive torador matchlock musket.
