Description:

The factory letter confirms this Third Model carbine was received in the warehouse on November 17, 1882, and shipped out five days later with 364 other Winchesters on order number 35449. Other Winchesters on this order number and date have been identified as having been shipped to Hawaii. On page 230 of, "The Winchester Book", by George Madis, the author notes that the "muskets made for Hawaii are in the 28,000 range", just like this carbine. Research by John Bell lists this rifle by serial number as one of those issued to the Hawaiian Citizen's Guard in the mid-1890s during the turmoil of the 1890s during the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii and subsequent Hawaiian counter-revolution. Like most of the few confirmed Hawaiian Winchesters, it has a three letter marking on the wrist: "CRT" on the right side of the wrist. This example also has "W E KEALKAI" (Ke Alaka`I is Hawaiian for "leadership: or the leader")on the right side of the butt and "NWMP" in a banner (spurious) and a brass plate on the left side of the butt. It has a bayonet stud/blade front sight, folding ladder and notch rear sight, saddle ring and sling swivels.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The carbine has an overall mottled dark gray patina with light pitting. The wood is also fair with scrapes and dings. The action functions fine. the "NWMP" marking on left side of the butt is spurious.
