Description:

Manufactured in 1882. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and late Second Model dust cover with serrated finger guide. The rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Arms Museum letter which describes it as: "rifle, 40/60 caliber, octagon barrel, 26 inch, plain trigger, shotgun butt, casehardened, checkered stock" and "pistol grip". (no mention of half magazine) The letters states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on May 12, 1882, and returned and repaired on June 12, 1886, August 5, 1889, and December 28, 1894. The nature of the factory work performed on the rifle in 1886, 1889 and 1894 is not listed. The rifle has a blued 26-inch full octagon barrel with half-magazine. The barrel has a special order Beach folding combination front sight and a special order folding leaf rear sight with a platinum sight line in place of the standard V-notch on the sight base and elevation bar. The folding leaf is graduated to "10" but lacks the usual "1876" marking. A Lyman peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The loading gate, dust cover and buttplate are blued. The rifle has a deluxe, fancy grain forearm and pistol grip stock with "Style H" factory checkering and a high polish piano finish. The stock has a shotgun style buttplate and ebony inlay on the pistol grip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER"S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "CAL. 45-60" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The caliber designation "45-60" is stamped in script numerals across the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "23246", is stamped in tiny numerals across the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as factory refurbished. The rifle retains 80% of the blue and 75% color casehardened finish and shows only careful handling wear. The barrel has nearly all of the blue finish with some minor edge wear and a few small spots of age discoloration. The factory legend and caliber markings are crisp. The blue finish on the dust cover and loading gate shows some handling wear, about 80% remains. The blue on the shotgun buttplate has faded to a blue/brown patina with some scattered age spotting. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever has slivered slightly and shows some edge wear but retains fiery case colors. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm retain at least 90% of high polish piano finish. Most of the finish wear is concentrated on the bottom and rear of the forearm. The stock and forearm have a few scattered, minor handling marks. The checkering on the stock and forearm shows some light handling wear but remains sharp. This is an attractive example of a desirable Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with special order features.
