Description:

This Model 1886 was manufactured in 1888 and has deluxe wood and an extra length special order 30 inch octagon barrel and corresponding full length magazine tube. The left side of the lower tang is marked "215 XX" indicating the XX grade wood. The forearm and pistol grip stock have multi-point checkering. The grip has an ebony insert. The small headed stock screw on the upper tang indicates the rifle once has a tang mounted peep sight. It is equipped with a notched blade front sight and flat top sporting rear sight and has the standard markings as well as "BROWNING BROS. OGDEN. U.T." This marking indicates this rifle was shipped by Winchester to the famous Browning family in their hometown of Ogden in the Utah Territory (rifles shipped to them after 1896 when Utah became a state dropped the "T."). See page 594 of The Winchester Book in which author George Madis explains that the Browning brothers often received quantities of the rifles based on their designs as part of their payment. The Winchester Model 1886 was based on John Moses Browning's designs and was the second Winchester based on his patents. The first was the famous Model 1885 Single Shot.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle displays primarily a dark brown patina with some oxidation, minor marks and light pitting. The wood is good with sharp recut checkering, some small hairline cracks, attractive figure, and minor dings and scratches. The action is fine, and the markings are mostly clear. The front sling ring is a crude replacement. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a scarce special order Deluxe Model 1886 with desirable Browning Bros. marking.
