Description:

The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearm Museum letter that lists the rifle features as: "Caliber: 22 S, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Weight: #2, Barrel length: 28 inches, Trigger: Set, Pistol grip, Sights: Lyman rear cup disc, Combination front, Blank in rear seat, Swiss butt plate" and "Spur lever". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on December 26, 1905, and returned for repair on July 29, 1914. The rifle has a 27-inch full octagon barrel with the caliber designation "25 R.F." stamped on the left barrel flat and Winchester proofmarks on the top of the barrel and receiver. The rifle apparently had the barrel shortened, re-chambered and re-bored or replaced when it was returned to the factory in 1914. The barrel and thickside receiver are blued, and the hammer, breechblock and lever are color casehardened. The pistol grip stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The barrel is fitted with a rare Lyman wind gauge combination front sight and equally rare Lyman two-leaf folding rear sight with flat top and bright triangle. A Lyman peep sight with large cup disk is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a single set trigger and special order Schuetzen style spur lever. The stock has a nickel-plated, brass Swiss buttplate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.". The lower tang is roll-stamped: "PAT. OCT. 7TH 79" behind the trigger. The serial number, "99258", is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the tang screws.

Rating Definition:

Excellent as factory rebarreled. The rifle retain 97% plus of the blue and color casehardened finish. Wear is limited to a few very insignificant handling marks. The bore is mirror bright. The Swiss butt plate retains nearly all of the original nickel-plated finish. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition and have nearly all of the original finish; wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. This is an excellent example of a Winchester special order Model 1885 Low Wall Sporting rifle from the renowned McCroskie collection
