Exceptional Special Order, Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Model 1876 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1881. This rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated finger guide along the rear edge. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as: "Rifle, 45/60 caliber, Barrel Length: 26 inches, Barrel Shape: Octagon, Set trigger, Checkered stock, 1/2 magazine", and "Shotgun butt". The rifle has a blued full octagon barrel, dust cover, loading gate and steel shotgun buttplate. The magazine tip, forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are color case-hardened. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with fine checkering and a high polish piano finish. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. A factory folding leaf peep sight with fifty minute graduations is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a factory single set-trigger. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. "CAL. 45-60" is roll-stamped in script letters on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The caliber "45-60" is stamped in script numerals across the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "16769", is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

ConditionExcellent. At least 90% of the color case-hardened finish remains intact. The barrel retains nearly 97% of the original blue finish with some very minor edge wear on the muzzle. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are deep and crisp. The dust cover has nearly all of the high polish blue finish intact. Almost of the fire blue finish remains on the loading gate. The blue on the buttplate has thinned to a translucent blue-gray patina. The receiver and side plates retain close to 95% of the original case hardened finish with fiery case colors. Handling wear on the receiver is limited to some silvering on the front edges and bottom of the receiver at the junction with the forearm. The hammer, lever, forearm cap and magazine tip have nearly all of the original case colors intact. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm remain in excellent condition and retain close to 95% of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to some dulling in the finish on the underside of the forearm between the checkered panel and the receiver and a few scattered and very minor handling and storage marks on the forearm and stock. The checkering on the stock and forearm is slightly flattened from handling but remains in excellent condition. This is an exceptional example of a deluxe, special order, Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle, the most impressive and imposing of all Winchester lever action rifles.
