This is a fine example of a Volcanic No.1 Pocket Pistol that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1859. The pistol features deluxe factory engraving and factory grips. A No. 1 Pistol with similar deluxe engraving is illustrated on page 75 of "VOLCANIC FIREARMS" by Edmund Lewis and Stephen Rutter. This pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, brass frame and loading lever with finger hole. The barrel is fitted with a steel pinch-back front sight blade. A steel fixed rear sight with rounded top is mounted in a dovetail on the receiver. The hammer has a knurled spur. The barrel is blued, the receiver is silver plated and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll stamped with the legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14.1854" utilized after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. as the New Haven Arms Co. in April 1857. The serial number "896" is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. Most Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistols were factory engraved with open scrollwork and were fitted walnut grips; No.1 Pocket Pistols with deluxe factory engraving and factory grips are rare.
