Exceptional Spencer Model 1865 Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine

Most of the Model 1865 Spencer carbines were manufactured in 1865 and 1866 after the end of the Civil War. Many were used during Reconstruction and in the Indian Wars before the Springfield trapdoors were widely issued. Many Spencers were also used by Native Americans during the Indian Wars including against Custer's cavalry at Little Bighorn. A large number of Model 1865s were sold as surplus to France for use during the Franco-Prussian War. It is possible this carbine was sent to France and then made its way to England. Spencers were also used in Canada which was still a British colony until made a federal dominion in 1867 and then granted full independence in the 20th century. This example has small inspection marks, U.S. government inspector cartouches ("EAW" and "DAP") on the left side of the stock, British "crown/V" proofmarks on the barrel and action at the breech, blade and folding ladder sights, the Stabler cutoff, and standard Spencer markings. The bottom of the stock near the toe is also numbered "107." The British proofmarks are unusual.

ConditionExcellent plus with 98% bright original blue and 95% brilliant casehardened colors, even on the bottom of the lever, the trigger plate and the buttplate. The original wood is also excellent with a few minor dings and scratches but not enough to detract from its appearance. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp.
