Description:

High quality Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's sword with Collin's & Co. blade and Solingen presentation quality grip, hilt and scabbard mounts. The sword has a regulation pattern, 32-inch, flat back, single fuller blade with spear-point tip. The reverse is stamped: "COLLIN'S & CO. / HARTFORD/CONN./1862" in three lines. The blade is plain with no etching or other decoration and has reverse polishing for about two-inches below the hilt. The hilt has a regulation pattern, two-branch, guard with "US" between the branches. The hilt terminates in a non-regulation, highly detailed, relief cast, lion head quillion. The pommel has a non-regulation flat top and back with highly detailed relief casting that features a bust of Medusa with a serpent that extends down the back of the grip. The silver-plated grip has a cast, simulated, fish skin finish wrapped with cast twisted wire. The gold-plated brass scabbard has highly detailed, cast suspension bands. The upper band features a relief cast officer with drawn sword holding a furled flag. The lower band features a Roman Imperial Eagle standard above a shield, helmet and antique weapons. The cast drag is decorated with applique thistle leaf and flowers. This sword appears to have been assembled by Collins utilizing a regulation blade and Solingen presentation quality hilt grip and scabbard decorations

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The hilt retains all of the gold plated finish and the highly detailed relief castings show minimal wear. The silver-plated grip remains in excellent condition. The blade is in very fine condition with some tarnish and small, scattered spots of age discoloration. The buff leather washer is in very good condition. The brass scabbard is in very good overall condition and has about 70% of the gold plated finish intact. The finish wear is confined to the facing side of the scabbard body between the brag and lower suspension band. The scabbard is free from dents and shows only light-moderate handling wear. This is a very fine example of an 1862 dated, presentation grade, Collin's & Co. sword with high grade, Solingen hilt, grip and scabbard mounts.
