Description:

This carbine is one of 6,686 manufactured by Sharps & Hankins for the U.S. Navy between 1862 and 1865. They were outfitted with leather covers over their barrels to protect against corrosion. Most were used heavily on various naval vessels throughout the war, and few have much of their original leather cover remaining. This example has the vast majority of the leather cover and the standard markings and features of the model.

Rating Definition:

Good. The action has mostly silvered out and been cleaned to a rather bright appearance. The buttplate retains 80% of the nickel plated finish. The leather is chipped and cracked and the flap that extends over the front of the frame is torn away. On the whole though, the cover is in good shape considering little to no leather remains on the majority of these carbines. There is some pitting and oxidation on the front of the frame. The wood has a heavy coating of varnish over dents and scratches. The action functions fine and the markings are clear.
