Late Whitney Arms Company U.S. Contract Model 1841 "Mississippi" Percussion Rifle Dated 1855

26,500 Model 1841 rifles were manufactured by the Eli Whitney Jr.'s company between 1843 and 1855. This late example is dated "1855" on the barrel tang and the lock and is marked "E. WHITNEY/US" below the bolster. The barrel has a brass blade front sight, notch rear sight with two folding leaves graduated for 100-500 yards, and "US/JH", "V/P" and "2 CC STEEL" markings at the breech. Late models like this were .58 caliber to allow them to fire the same Minie balls used in the Model 1855 rifle-muskets. The side plate has "BJM" hand scratched on it, and the left flat has two faint cartouches. One is a oval "WAT" stamp. A back up nipple and some patch material are in the patch box.

ConditionVery good. The barrel and lock display gray and brown patina and have a patches of mild pitting. The brass has attractive aged patina and some bright sections. The stock is also very good and has a ding and chip near the barrel tang and the typical pressure marks and scratches throughout. The lock functions fine, and most of the markings are crisp.
