Engraved and Relief Carved Flintlock American Long Rifle

The only marking found is an unclear stamp on the underside of the side plate. Other similar rifles date to Pennsylvania in the era just before and around the American Revolution. The undeveloped floral motif on the patch box finial and comparatively light overall ornamentation further suggest this era of manufacture. Many of these earlier guns are unmarked. It has the blade and notch sights commonly seen on "Kentucky" rifles, a plain trigger, and a dark, oil finished maple stock with moulding along the forend, brass nose cap and other furniture, cheekpiece, and relief floral carving that extends from ahead of the cheekpiece, along its edge, and to the rear of the butt in one continual line with symmetrical floral motif at the rear instead of the more common rococo "C" scrolls. Only the patch box is engraved.

ConditionFine as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel was shortened from the breech end during the reconversion, and a five in section at the front of the stock is spliced. The barrel and lock are mostly dark brown, and there is a brighter rough area at the breech. The brass has been cleaned and has a mix of bright and aged surface. The stock is very dark overall and has some visible flame figure showing through. There is evidence of a crack at the wrist and other minor repaired cracks, chipping along the forend and around the lock, a hairline crack extending back from the entry pipe, and chips at the toe. The right side of the buttplate tang is also chipped. The lock is not functional.
