Incised Carved Flintlock Kentucky Long Rifle

This rifle has been previously attributed to gun and lock maker Adam Angstadt of Kutztown and Maxatawny, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in the early 19th century. Like many areas where American long rifles were produced, Kutztown was primarily settled by German immigrants and their progeny. Joseph and Peter Angstadt were also gunmakers in Berks County. The rifle has the "Roman Nose" stock profile associated with the Angstadt family as well as the Bethlehem/Lehigh Valley School. The sights are the standard fixed blade and notch style found on most "Kentucky" rifles. The barrel has no visible markings and is secured by wedges. The lock is signed " [P or B?] KEIM" below the bridled flash pan and has light engraving on the hammer and tail. The full length, curly maple stock has double carved line accents on the forend above the ramrod, brass furniture including a engraved and pierced patch box, a bone inlay in the lower piercing (also likely one previously in the upper piercing), a pair of German silver half-moon plates around the extended barrel tang, an engraved silver inlay on the cheek rest which has a brass edge plate, and rococo carving at the left side rear.

ConditionGood as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock have dark patina, mild oxidation, and moderate pitting concentrated at the breech. The brass and silver have an attractive aged patina throughout. There are some loose and possibly added pins on some of the furniture. The stock has been sanded and has re-cut carving on the butt, some cracking and chipping around the lock inlet, period brass plate repairs below the lock and on the left side below the side plate, some minor fill near the latter, a crack at the toe, and some minor marks and scratches throughout. The lock functions fine.
