Description:

This factory engraved Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy Model Revolver was manufactured in 1863. The revolver has an octagon barrel and a five-shot cylinder. The revolver has a blued barrel and cylinder with a casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated and the revolver is fitted with a one-piece grip. The revolver is decorated with what appears to be a Colt "Late Percussion Vine Style Scroll" engraving. This engraving style is distinguished primarily by the lack of punch-dot or stippled background and was the primary factory engraving on Colt revolvers from 1861-1870. The sides of the hammer are engraved with a wolf's head motif. The revolver lacks the small "E" stamped next to the serial number on the barrel and other components. This mark, along with a punch-dot, apostrophe or "I" was frequently used by Colt to designate the parts for special handling polish or finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the one-line legend "ADRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in an engraved panel. "COLTS/PATENT" is located on the left side of the frame in a scrollwork oval. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". The full serial number "3540" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The barrel wedge and arbor pin both match as well. The revolver is complete with a Colt mahogany English style case with five compartments. The case is lined with purple velvet and contains: (1) a brass tin of Hicks percussion caps with embossed lid and green paper label, (2) blued iron two-cavity bullet mold, (3) blued steel L-shaped screwdriver and nipple wrench, (4) a packet of six Hazards combustible envelope cartridges for "REVOLVING BELT PISTOL" and (5) a small, copper powder flask with fixed spout embossed with the eagle and shield motif over crossed pistols and a ribbon embossed "E. PLURIBUS UNUM".

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver has a silver gray patina with traces of the original finish in protected areas of the barrel, frame and cylinder. The surfaces of the barrel, loading lever and frame are smooth with minimal pitting or handling marks. The engraving is sharp. The cylinder has a crisp scene and has numerous small dents; the rear face and rear edges of the cylinder are heavily battered. The trigger guard and back strap have 85% of the silver plated finish. The grip has yellowed from age and shows only minor handling wear. The action is fine. The case exterior is in fine condition with minor scratches. The lining is slightly faded but remains in fine condition; wear is limited to four or five minor tears opposite the revolver front sight, hammer and loading lever latch. The bullet mold and tool are in very good condition and retain most of the original blue finish. The cartridge packet is in excellent condition with minimal wear. The flask is in good condition with about 40% of the brown lacquer finish and the balance a brown aged patina with some scattered, minor dents. The cap tin is in fine condition. This is a seldom encountered example of a factory engraved Colt M1862 Pocket Navy Revolver. You will look for a long time to find another. Formerly of the Will Hoffeld Collection, purchased from Rev. Lester Meyers.
