Description:

This exceptional cased Colt Single Action Flattop Target Model Revolver was manufactured in 1891. This revolver is one of 84 Flattop Target revolvers chambered for the .450 Eley cartridge. The barrel has the rarely encountered "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON" address. The revolver has the distinctive flat top strap with flat sides with dovetail mounted target rear sight and block mounted adjustable front sight. The trigger has a knurled face. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur, and the ejector rod has the standard knurled head. The revolver has a high polish blue finish. The hammer sides are polished bright, and the hammer top, trigger and screws have a fire blue finish. The two-piece, black, hard rubber grips are checkered and are embossed with the Rampant Colt logo in an oval. The caliber designation: "450 ELEY." is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel. The underside of the barrel is stamped with small London "Crown/V" and "Crown/CP" proof and inspection marks along with the caliber designation "45M". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt "Two-Line/Three-Date" patent markings followed by the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. The serial number "143506" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The assembly number "20" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. Small London proof and inspection marks are stamped between each cylinder chamber. The revolver is complete with a British style oak case. The case is lined with red baize with four compartments and a 31-round cartridge block. A dealer's card marked: "Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Co./ 26 Glasshouse Street/Piccadilly Circus, London SW" is attached to the inside of the case lid. The case contains: (1) pewter Hawksley oil bottle, (2) blued steel cleaning rod with bulbus head and slotted tip, (3) brass cleaning rod with bone head and threaded tip, (4) L-shaped combination screwdriver, (5) key and (6) brass bore brush. This revolver and case are nearly identical to the Pall Mall Flattop Target Revolver serial number "143528" illustrated on page 258 of "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" by R.L. Wilson.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This revolver is all original and retains 90% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish. The finish is thin of the back strap, grip strap and cylinder. The blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, frame, trigger guard and loading gate shows minimal wear. Nearly all of the fire blue finish is present on the hammer, trigger and frame screws. The grips are in excellent condition with very minor handling wear. All of the markings are extremely crisp. The action functions perfectly. The case exterior remains in very fine condition with some scattered and very minor handling and storage marks. The red baize lining is also in very fine condition with minimal fading. Wear is limited to some very minor compression marks from contact with the revolver butt, hammer and barrel. This is an excellent original example of a rare, Colt Single Action Army Flattop Target Model Revolver with Hartford and Pall Mall barrel address and Colt London Agency case and accessories.
