Description:

According to an included letter from Jerry Jackson of Confederate State Military Antiques, this sword is attributed as the production of Dufilho of New Orleans. Information on Dufilho is very limited, though the firm is known to have shared the city with Thomas Griswold & Company and was likely active around the same time. Like many Confederate swords this example follows closely after an antebellum U.S. pattern, particularly the 1850 foot officer sword. 34 3/4 inches overall, with a 29 1/2 curved single fuller blade absent of etching or maker's marks. The hilt is cast brass production with floral motifs, a two-piece knuckle guard, helmet pommel, and a wire and leather wrapped grip. With an incomplete scabbard consisting of a detached gilt throat and suspension band and a silvered brass tip with drag.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The blade shows a mixed gray and brown patina with scattered heavy spotting, the brass shows a dark aged color, and the grip shows some scuffs and wear. The incomplete scabbard is fair (see above).
