Description:

Only approximately 1,002 of these were manufactured by E. G. Lamson & Co. during the Civil War. Lamson also manufactured the Palmer carbines which also fired rimfire cartridges. They are among the most advanced weapons of the time and fired the .56-50 Spencer cartridge. The seven-shot magazine tube is located underneath the barrel within the forearm and is loaded from the right side of the action similar to later lever action rifles. All of these carbines appear to have been delivered after the hostilities ended. The left side of the receiver is marked "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE.23.1863/MAR. 15, 1864." There is a small "S" stamped on most of the components, a very small "GGS" stamped on the top of the stock just ahead of the buttplate tang, and a "GGS" cartouche and "P" stamp on the left side of the stock near the rear of the saddle ring bar. It has a fixed blade front sight and two leaf folding rear sight with "1", "4", and "6" graduation markings. The cleaning rod is offset to the right side of the forearm.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel retains 25% of the original blue finish, and vibrant patches of original case colors are found in the protected areas, such as around the hammer. The stock and forearm are both very good and have minor dings and scratches, a chip on the right side edge of the forearm, and some speckling of white paint. The action functions fine and the markings are mostly clear.
