Description:

This is a fine example of a scarce Model 1901 Mannlicher pistol-carbine. This model ushered in the first of many new and unique semi-automatic designed rifles and pistols from the Mannlicher company. They were all designed by the Austrian engineer and aristocrat Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher, who was one of the best weapon designers in the late 1800s and was instrumental in the early development of semi-automatic firearms throughout Europe. This series of pistol-carbine was based on the continuation of his 1896 Mannlicher pistol design. Many designers have stated that this pistol-carbine design was better balanced than the 1896 Mauser carbine design but never attained the reputation and sales volume that the Mauser model did. This pistol-carbine is very unique in that it operates using a concealed internal hammer that is initially cocked by depressing a small lever on the right side of the frame. It fires the 7.63 Mannlicher pistol cartridge via a small detachable box magazine located on the underside of the action. It can also be loaded through the top of the action using regular Mannlicher stripper clips. It has a blow-back design that, after firing, starts with an initial short rearward movement of the upper receiver/barrel group which helps starts the cycling action. This allows the bolt to disengage from the barrel and continue its rearward movement to eject the spent cartridge. The top of the receiver is dated "1906" and directly below that on the flat is a small single Austrian Eagle acceptance proof/single "Crown N" proof. The lower left side of the upper receiver is the serial number (619), which is also stamped on the base plate of the magazine. No other proof or serial number are visible. This model has a military style tangent rear sight graduated from 1-4 (100-400meters) and a fixed inverted "V" type front sight along with a full length wooden barrel cover that acts as a forend and a fixed, full length rifle stock attached to the rear of the action. The left side of the carbine has a factory installed sling swivels on the barrel band with a small slot through the rear of the buttstock for a sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% of the blued finish overall with edge and high spot wear mixed with browning on the front end of the magazine well, the underside of the trigger guard and upper side of he receiver. The stock and forend/barrel jacket are both in very good condition with a nice original factory varnish showing minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides. The rear of the barrel jacket showing some minor old age stress cracks. A solid example of a very scarce Mannlicher pistol-carbine.
