Outstanding Late Production K98 Mauser Bolt Action Sniper Rifle with Matching Experimental Swept Back Style Scope Mount and ZF4 Style Scope

This is a late war K98 rifle manufactured by the BRNO factory that has been fitted with a late war swept-back type sniper mount. Both the Mauser and J.P. Sauer and Sons K98 rifles have been noted with a standard, late war, swept-back type mount, while this example is a somewhat different configuration, which may indicate a unique Brno factory design. These late war swept-back type mounts were developed as a war expedient design, intending to lower costs in lieu of the earlier models that required special receivers or complicated mounting techniques, while still being rigid and robust. They were fitted with new late war ZF4 sniper scopes. The slightly longer, dovetailed scope base is attached to the left side of the receiver via three screws and two taper pins. It is fitted with an all steel scope mount, manufactured from two separate sections that are pinned together with a single locking lever on the left side. Both the base and mount are similar to the long side rail type sniper system. The mount is fitted with a post-war Czech ZF4 scope marked "OD/4X/4.5 Degree/27355", indicating manufactured at the Opticotechna factory in Brunn. The mount is stamped with the rifle serial number (85562) and it has a gray phosphate/parkerized style finish, while the scope has a high polish, post war type blue finish. It is fitted with the standard German three-post crosshair reticle. The receiver is marked "dot/1944" with no visible serial number, while the barrel is numbered "85582". Both have the appropriate "eagle/63" and or single "eagle" firing proofs. The barrel is stamped with a "dot" inside a shield factory proof. It has the late war unnumbered/unproofed stamped components. The bolt is numbered "581/a" and has the large key type safety. It has the wartime laminated stock and handguard that has a single "H" Waffenamt proof on the right side. The rifle is complete with an original cleaning rod, sheet metal front sight cover and rubber muzzle cover.

ConditionExcellent with 98% blue finish. The trigger guard, floorplate and scope mount have 98% of their parkerized type of finish. The scope has 99% of its high polish blued finish, and the optics are somewhat clear but hazy. The stock and handguard are both in very good plus condition with a professionally repaired duffle bag cut under the rear barrel band. As noted, the scope mount is matching to the rifle but the complete bolt assembly is marked "581". Regardless this is still an exceptionally rare and very seldom seen late war swept back variant sniper rifle.
