Early Model 1935 Nazi Stahlhelm with Hand Painted "Normandy" Style Camouflage

While camouflage painting is seen on a number of Nazi helmets, the most typical method was to use spray paint originally intended for vehicles, but this example shows brush markings, with a solid layer of light green covering the original factory paint job, broken up with streaks and blotches of darker green and small spots of black. Additionally, the chipping and wear on the helmet reveals the original metal, dark factory paint, and a layer of khaki brown; while no provenance was provided with the helmet, this would suggest that the helmet was first camo-painted in a style associated with Rommel's Afrika Korps and Nazi combat units in Egypt and Tunisia, and then overpainted in the multi-tone green associated with Nazi units present at Normandy during Operation Neptune. Additionally, a visible ring was left above the brim and skirt, suggesting that either a face veil or a band for securing local foliage was once present. The hand-brushed brown and green base coats are also present on the interior up to the webbing obscuring the stamps, with a faint "1937" maker's stamp on the chinstrap and a set of faded and struck out hand markings (possibly "Gebhardt") on the webbing.

ConditionVery fine. The exterior retains over 85% of the camouflage paint, with some flaking and chipping exposing well aged brown steel, along with some bright wear on the edge of the skirt. The leather shows wear and staining appropriate to use, with some cracking of the chinstrap.
