Relief Chiseled and Gold Damascened F.J. Savuage Flintlock Fowling Piece with Raised Carved Wood and Silver Furniture

Manufactured circa 1760 to 1770 by F.J. Savuage of Liege, Belgium. The rear barrel section is octagon, ending in a series of ring turnings and is decorated with gold damascened rococo scrolls on a blue background. The gold is chased and engraved with fine detail. The top barrel flat has the block letter inscription "F.J. SAVUAGE A LIEGE" in gold. The touchhole is lined with gold. Beyond the ring turnings the barrel section is round. The blade front sight is surrounded by damascened work matching that found on the breech. The barrel tang is engraved with rococo style scrolls, shells and foliage within engraved borders. The lock plate has the rare "rain proof" sculpted pan. The lock plate, cock and steel have chiseled raised borders. Within the borders are chiseled in relief rococo scrolls, flowers and shells with damascened backgrounds. The tail of the lock has an unusual relief lozenge-shaped bead set perpendicular to the long axis of the lock. Flanking this feature is a shell and foliage damascened gold vine rosette and leaves. The face of the steel has a chiseled relief shaped feature without gold damascened decoration. The silver mounts are richly sculpted, chased and engraved. The walnut stock is sculpted in the French style. It has raised molding on the forend, around the lock and side plate panels and following the trigger guard profile. At both ends of the guard, the molding terminates in relief carved acanthus leaf finials. The comb wrist juncture is well carved in relief with an asymmetrical finial. The lock and side plate panel molding have a second level surround composed of relief scallops. Very richly relief carved rococo scrolls and flowers are clustered around the barrel tang and the ramrod tailpiece. The forend is cut in half just ahead of the first barrel retaining pin. This appears to be a takedown feature (allowing the buttstock to be removed for cleaning the barrel without removing the foreword end of the forend. Overall the gun is overwhelmingly French in style, a movement that was dominating European arms production at the time. The rococo engraving, chasing and carving show a close affinity with the French pattern books. Formerly of the Peter Tillou Collection. Tillou museum style collection marker is on the inside of the trigger guard.

ConditionFine. The barrel has a mottled brown patina retaining streaks of original blue finish. Over 95% of the original gold remains. The silver is fine. The wood is fine with some small repairs around the lock and some minor pressure dents and scratches. The takedown joint appears to have been damaged and was functionally aborted with two small wood filled repairs. Mechanically fine.
