Attractive Silver and Gold Embellished Mercier Flintlock Blunderbuss with Elliptical Muzzle and Folding Stock

The lock is signed "MERCIER" just below the integral flash pan in an arch and is stamped "AB" on the underside. The barrel has silver inlaid floral patterns at the breech and muzzle, gold inlays in the middle bands and muzzle, and an elliptical bore that measures 1inch tall and 1 1/2 inches wide. The gauge above is estimated. A saddle ring and belt hook are fitted on the left flat. Many of the fittings have floral engraved accents. The stock has carved accents, silver wire inlay on the forend at the ramrod entry pipe, breech, and comb; a button on top of the wrist just behind a mother of pearl thumb piece that allows the butt to fold under the trigger guard, and a smooth buttplate with engraved finial. A wooden ramrod is included. There were at several Mercier gunmakers in the 1600s and early 1700s in France and Switzerland (then closely tied with France). The elliptical bore creates a much better sight plane than a standard blunderbuss since the muzzle is in a straight line with the breech but still facilitates easier reloading since the muzzle is wider than a standard musketoon or carbine. The folding stock makes the weapon easier to store, and the belt hook and saddle ring help in retention. It was likely used on horseback or in a coach.

ConditionFine. The original finish on the barrel has mostly turned to a dark brown patina, but there are patches of light blue finish, 75% plus of the original silver inlay, and around half of the gold band accents. The lock, side plate, and other fittings display smooth gray-brown patinas and have some slight pitting. The stock is very good and has some minor dings and marks and retains nearly all of the original silver wire inlays. The lock functions very well and has crisp markings. This is a beautiful early blunderbuss with some interesting features.
