Description:

The Galand revolver was patented in 1868 by Frenchman Charles-François Galand (1832-1900). The Galand is one of the first double action cartridge revolvers and utilized an interesting under-lever mechanism to move the barrel and cylinder forward for extraction and reloading. The heavy, but consistent, trigger pull in double action was a liability, but accurate single action shots are certainly possible with the blade and notch sights. This example is marked "C F GALAND/INVR BREVETE" on the left side of the barrel at the breech, "MANUFACTURE LIEGEOISE D'ARMES A FEU" on the top of the barrel, "3621" on the left side of the frame, and Liege proofmarks. The barrel, cylinder, and frame all have gold and silver wire inlaid borders and floral designs. The grips are smooth, and a lanyard ring and stud are fitted to the butt. The gun comes in a hardwood case with blue baize lining and a cartridge block with five rounds of ammunition (spots for many more).

Rating Definition:

Fine. 60% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish and most of the gold and silver inlay remain with one inch of gold inlay missing on the front of the cylinder. The grip straps and other spots of fading display brown and gray patina. The hammer has traces of straw colors and primarily a silver-gray patina. The grips are very fine and have minor handling and storage marks and attractive natural grain with some yellowing from handling and age. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp. The case is very good and has mild storage wear including some stains and compression marks on the lining and slight separation at the right front corner.
