Description:

Measuring 29 inches overall, with a 21 inch single fuller blade showing a broad and wavy hamon and installed in a copper habaki with a silver inlaid symbol on the right and a gold inlaid symbol on the left. The round tsuba is of copper construction, with a cut-through double sided scene of a man armed with a jian sword fighting a demon, and the grip is wrapped with black cord, capped with gold accented floral pattern fuchi and kashira, and fitted with a pair of gilt copper menuki. The tang is signed, with a traditional style 6-symbol signature on the right side and a gold inlaid 6-figure signature on the left. Information provided by the consignor attributes the markings on the kashira as "first object (gold)" and "sharp treasure(silver)", the right side tang signature possibly being to the swordsmith Tomo Haru and the gold tang inlay being a test cut record for a "waki-ge" position, implying a successful cut through a cadaver torso at just below pectoral level. With a black lacquer finished saya

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. The blade shows a chip at the tip and light edge wear, with a strong hamon, attractive color, a few light scratches and fine metal grain. The tsuba is missing a few spacers, and the ends of the cord wrap have been secured with glue, otherwise the hilt is very good. The saya is rough, being held together by tape.
