Plains Half Stock Percussion Rifle by W. W. Hackney of Dayton, Ohio

William W. Hackney of Dayton, Ohio, was active from the late 1850s to at least 1880 as gunsmith. From 1858 to 1860 and 1870 to 1880 he was in partnership with the Schneider family suggesting this rifle was built in the 1860s. Hackney was also involved in civil affairs in Dayton later in life. The heavy barrel has been turned down at the muzzle for a starter and is equipped with a German silver blade front sight and an adjustable notch rear sight. It is equipped with double set triggers. The only visible marking without disassembly is "W. W. HACKNEY/DAYTON/O" on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight. The underside of the lock has a "G" stamp, and the barrel was manufactured by Remington as indicated by the "REMINGTON" stamp on the bottom at the breech. The straight grain walnut half stock has a high gloss "piano" varnish finish and is fitted with German silver furniture including a blank oval inlay on the cheekpiece. A sling loop is integral to the second ramrod pipe and the bottom of the butt has a hole for fitting a second.

ConditionFine. The barrel has a blend of original blue finish and an even, aged plum brown. There are some dings and dents along the outside edges and some other minor marks. The breech and lock have a smokey gray patina and minor blemishes. The German silver fittings have dulled overtime and display an attractive aged patina. The stock is also very good and has a variety of small pressure marks and scratches, deep tones, and strong varnish. The left side of the rear sight is cracked. The markings throughout are distinct, and the lock and double set triggers function flawlessly.
