Description:

This is a rare example of an early Steyr/Mannlicher self-loading, "blow-forward" Model 1894 pistol Serial Number "2". These early Mannlicher pistols were all designed by Ferdinand Von Mannlicher and were produced by the Austrian Steyr factory. Von Mannlicher was an exceptional early engineer and designer who teamed with the Steyr factory to produce all of his rifle and pistols from the late 1890s through post WWII. Based on this example being serial number "2" there is an extremely high possibly that this could actually be the "very first" model 1894 Steyr pistol ever produced! This example is actually one of the rare large frame pistols, which has the "internal magazine" that loaded through the top of the action via stripper clips. The other unique design feature is that the barrel actually slides forward during the firing/cycling of the pistol, hence the collector name of a "blow forward" pistol. Then when the barrel returns into battery (e.g. when the barrel is moving reward after firing), the barrel strips off and chambers a new cartridge from the internal magazine. It is also a "double action" mechanism with a rebounding hammer, i.e. when a cartridge is inside the chamber and with the hammer down, you just pull the trigger as in the double action mode, just like pistols today. Very unique for "1894". The top of the barrel and left side of the receiver are stamped with serial number "2" and when you remove the left side and side plate you will see that all of the internal parts are correctly numbered "2" with the side plate and frame both having assembly number "09" stamped on them, clearly indicating it has all matching numbers. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips. It has an all rust blued finish with straw color small parts and case colors on the trigger and hammer.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 75% plus of the original blue finish overall with general edge and high spot wear with thinning and browning on the grip straps, with some minor blue touch up on top of the barrel and barrel rib. The lower right side of the frame, upper area of the trigger guard and center section of the barrel all show minor/light areas of scattered erosion or deep pitting, probably from sitting in a holster or case. The walnut grips are in very good condition overall with nice distinct checkering on both sides, showing moderate handling marks and scratches. Notwithstanding the note condition issues of this rare pistol, everyone has to understand that this being serial number "2", it would have certainly been fired vigorously, seen considerable handling and display! Making this in actuality an extremely high condition, rare early production Steyr pistols.
