Description:

Fixed sights, with the left side of the barrel extension marked "BREVETE./S.G.D.G." and "ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS PIEPER./HERSTAL-LIEGE./BERGMANN'S PATENT.", with the serial number on the underside of the frame, a series of Liege/Belgian proofs on the right side of the barrel, extension and frame, and a pair of checkered grips with matching numbers on the interior. Additionally, the front strap is marked "L.S.K.16.80." in the style of the German Army, suggesting that it was the 80th handgun in the inventory of Landwehr (reserve/"home guard") Sanitaetskompanie (field medic company) Number 16. Research indicates the existence of a Sanitation Company No. 16 as a component of the 5th Bavarian Reserve Division. Formed in 1914 as part of the I Royal Bavarian Reserve Corps, the 5th Bavarian was heavily engaged on the Western Front from the very beginning, participating in the initial frontier assault on Belgium and France, and the ensuing "race to the sea" as both the Germans and French extended their battle lines northward. Taking their place on the line in the resulting trench warfare, the 5th was engaged at the Battle of the Somme, 2nd Battle of the Aisne, Passchendaele, the Spring Offensive and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The unit was demobilized in 1919 along with much of the German Army.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 80% of the original blue finish, showing some bright edge wear, hints of a brown patina and mild handling marks. The grips are fine with mild dings and dents. The bolt, locking block and barrel assembly are sluggish, though the pistol is otherwise mechanically fine.
