Description:

This is a very scarce example of an early Bergmann semi-automatic target pistol with the long barrel, target sights and rare set trigger. Only a handful of this rare long-barreled target models were ever produced. Additionally this example is fitted with a rare set of fully adjustable target sights. The rear sight can be drift adjusted laterally and also the aperture can be adjusted for elevation. It is fitted with a semi-hooded target front sight that is also adjustable for windage that is fitted with a pin-head front sight blade. Theodore Bergman was a pioneer in developing semi-automatic pistols in Europe in the late 1890s right along side Mauser, Borchardt, Luger and Walther. This model 1896 was one of his first full successful semi-automatic pistols. They have the distinctive flat top bolt and top cover with the thin, light weight firing pin with the smooth flat side frame. The Model 1896 can be identified by the two angled cuts on the right side of the frame. This model has the integral magazine positioned in front of the trigger. This target model, as noted, has a factory installed set trigger, and the underside of the frame has also been fitted with a curved finger rest. The right side of the pistol has oval shaped logo that depicts a "mountain man" logo holding a pick behind his back with sunrays emanating from behind him. The top of the oval is marked "Gaggenau" and the lower area is marked " V.C.S. Suhl", indicating that these pistols were manufactured by the Schilling Company. The right side front frame area is stamped serial number "1443". The left side of the barrel is marked with the bore diameter of "278" followed by a "Double Crown/U" proofmark in front and one behind the number. The lower left front edge of the frame is stamped in three lines: "PATENT/BREVET/S.G.D.G." The upper left side of the frame is also stamped with a small Double Crown/U proof. It is fitted with a set of walnut checkered grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% of the faded original blue finish overall showing edge and high spot wear mixed with some light browning of the finish on the barrel, with the grips straps also showing somewhat heavier brown patina/oxidation. The smaller parts have 40% of their straw colors overall mostly in the protected areas. The grips are in very fine condition with nice, distinct checkering overall with only minor handling marks. This is a very scarce example of a Bergmann Model 1896 Target pistol.
