Description:

This special order Winchester Model 1892 Short Takedown Rifle was manufactured circa 1914. Unfortunately this is a "no record gun" in the factory ledgers. This rifle has what appears to be a factory gold inlaid border on the sides of the receiver. The left side of the receiver features again what appears to be a factory engraved "ACL" monogram. The rifle has a special order 20-inch octagon barrel and full-length magazine. In addition to the rare combination of a takedown rifle with short barrel, this rifle has a fancy grade, highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with Style H checkering and a high polish piano finish. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co." Other special order features include: double set triggers, sling swivel eyelets on the stock and forearm tip, folding combination tang sight, Winchester Express front sight with bright bead and a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, bolt and crescent buttplate. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The left barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." ahead of the dovetail blank. The caliber designation "25-20 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The Winchester oval "W/P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The serial number "785355" is stamped across the bottom of the receiver just behind the takedown collar. An accompanying Cody Firearms Museum serial number research request states that "no records" were found for this rifle. Model 1892 Short Rifles are rare and are seldom found with a takedown barrel. The addition of fancy grade walnut forearm and pistol grip stock combined with the other special order features and unusual gold inlaid border and factory engraved monogram make this a one-of-a-kind rifle.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the bright original blue finish. The barrel has some light wear at the muzzle with traces of edge wear on the barrel high points. The end of the magazine has a few minor scuff marks. The blue is thinning slightly on the sides of the forearm cap and takedown collar and shows traces of brown patina. The upper edges of the receiver show traces of finish wear and there are a few faint scratches on the receiver sides. The crescent buttplate has minimal edge wear. The hammer and lever retain nearly all the muted case colors. The gold inlaid borders are in excellent condition and the elaborate monogram is sharp. The fancy grade walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition and retain close to 95% of the high polish piano finish; wear is limited to a few very minor handling and storage marks. This is a really unique, deluxe, special order, gold inlaid Winchester Model 1892 Short Takedown Rifle. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
