Description:

This original mahogany case has a forest green velvet lined interior that is French fitted for a Colt Dragoon revolver with a lanyard ring as well as related accessories. The lid plaque is inscribed "W. H. Howland/FROM/T.W. Park, John Sanborn, J. W. Bingham." Colt patent powder flask with silver plated spout, jag, and oiler are in the case. There are also sections for the absent cleaning rod, bullet mold, and ammunition. Information included by the consignor from Herb Glass back in 1968 states that the revolver originally in the case was a Dragoon manufactured around 1855 that showed signs of holster wear suggesting it likely saw military use in the Civil War. The exact men involved in the presentation are not immediately clear, but period sources provide many prospects. Not surprisingly, names of men who served in various Union units during the Civil War correspond with those on the plaque. There are also businessmen and politicians, especially men tied to the Northeast's railroads, in period records that match as well as members of various Free Mason lodges. No direct connections between men with all four names have been found, but some potential recipients include: William Henry Howland (born 1831 in Vassalborogh, Maine, and died in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1869), a teacher, school principal, businessman, and the author of the novel "The Quakeress Spy: a Romance of 1780"; William H. Howland of Rochester, New York, who serve in the 8th New York Cavalry in 1862 as a private and left the service in 1865 as a commissary sergeant; and William H. Howland of the 13th and 17th Vermont Infantry who died on May 10, 1864, from wounds received during the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6. The prospective presenters included : lawyer, businessman, philanthropist, and politician Trenor W. Park (1828-1882) from Vermont who moved to San Francisco before returning to his home state near the end of the Civil War. He made a gift of $1,000 dollars while in San Francisco to support Vermont soldiers during the war. James W. Bingham was also a businessman in San Francisco and New York, and a John H. Sanborn (1842-1903) served in the 4th and 9th Vermont Infantry.

Rating Definition:

The case is very good with a crack in the lid, the plaque separated and contained within the case, and mild fading, staining, and tears on the original faded lining. The flask is very fine with over half of the original silver on the spout/cap and original lacquer over most of the body. The other accessories are also fine.
